Electronic Tolling

Complete or partial Electronic Tolling should be implemented to all toll booths. On our end Electronic Tolling is a little plastic device you throw at the end of your dashboard that automatically deducts your account rather than hassle in your seat looking for spare-change and cash in any form. ​A-B because a lot faster with Electronic Tolling.

I believe complete or partial Electronic Tolling should be implemented at all toll booths.  

Anyone from the Bay Area and remember the difference that FasTrak has created?  FasTrak is an electronic toll collection system which operates with the use of a toll tag and special equipment installed in the FasTrak lanes. The lane equipment reads the tag information and the number of axles on your vehicle. This information is used to deduct the correct toll amount from your account balance. 

On our end FasTrak is a little plastic device you throw at the end of your dashboard that automatically deducts your account rather than hassle in your seat looking for spare-change and cash in any form.  Whether you or the driver in front of you in traffic is frantically looking for spare-change it will create congestion before the toll; at the end of the day you're going to get to your destination a lot faster with FasTrak.  FasTrak also lowers the amount deducted for bridge toll thanks to the savings in employment.  

Currently FasTrak is used on all lanes of the Golden Gate bridge, but other bridges in the Bay use partial Electronic Tolling.  FasTrak can also be used on several Southern California toll roads in Orange and Riverside Counties

Electronic Tolling has definitely changes the game for Transportation Planners/daily commuters/and drivers alike.

One issue I have with the electronic tolling systems like fast track is the almost monthly bills mailed. If you miss one of the bills given to you there is a late fee. That is unnecessary, a simple fix would be to just add the fees to a end of the year bridge tolls bill presented by the DMV.

"FasTrak also lowers the amount deducted for bridge toll thanks to the savings in employment." The elimination of jobs is always a tough pill to swallow. I would rather pay $1.00 more if it meant that it was saving someones job. Or, better yet find other effective ways to make up the deficit. How about lowering the current toll for cars and capitalizing on the other bridge use, tourism. I think $2.00 to walk/bike across the Golden Gate Bridge would be a bargain.

Another perspective could be that although the lower paying jobs of collecting tolls would be eliminated, there could potentially be an increase in higher paying jobs such as developing and maintaining software and managing accounts.

Would you like to suggest an easy way for people to purchase/pick up FasTrak devices? In the adoption phase, the people who are newly choosing FasTrak or being mandated to use it could use a bit of help setting things up.

You can pick-up a FasTrak pass at Costco. It comes preloaded with around $30 (not 100% sure on the amount). After you have purchased your device it's relatively easy to set-up your account online, but it does require a credit card. Once you've exhaustive your "preloaded" amount they will reload your account using the credit card you provided during set-up.
